We Are All Part of the Village
There is an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child, but if you have ever been pregnant, or stood by the side of someone you love going through it, you know that the right pregnancy services, and the right people, are needed long before the baby arrives.
The thing is, a village only works because not everyone plays the same role. Maybe you are the one who is pregnant right now, exhausted and looking for someone who just gets it. Maybe you are the woman still on the journey, and it is proving to be longer than expected. Maybe you are the woman who has decided that motherhood is not your path, and yet you are drawn to care for the women who are on it, because nurturing others is its own form of that energy. Maybe you already did this, you went through the sleepless nights and the sore body, and now you want to pass that knowledge forward. Or maybe you are the friend who has absolutely no idea, but you just forwarded this article to someone who does, and that act alone is part of the village.
Why Community Changes Everything
As you might know by now, I am the practitioner who doesn’t have kids, but nurturing mothers is my own form of that energy. I may not need a village of my own in the same way, and yet I know the pressure society puts on women regardless of the decisions we take. Whether you choose motherhood or you don’t, the world will have something to say about it, which is one more reason to stay close, and to support each other’s journey.
Since I started offering pregnancy massage, I have had the chance to meet so many incredible practitioners working to make motherhood more joyful when society falls short. And so this article is a small celebration of that village we have built.
Because as it turns out, Walthamstow and surroundings has a quietly brilliant network of people doing exactly this. Here are some of them, and I hope this becomes an ongoing resource you return to, share with someone who needs it, or add to with your own comments and recommendations.
